Glammo

As part of the 2018 Dublin Bowie Festival, Image Now invited 25 designers to create a typographic poster inspired by one of Bowie’s 25 studio albums. We were assigned his eighteenth, BLACK TIE WHITE NOISE. Inspired by the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which a newly-wed Bowie watched from his hotel window, BTWN is a dark and intensely 90s piece of work, and we decided it deserved a dark, intensely 90s typeface, which we drew on a strict grid to save time, or try to. The result, Glammo, blends references to techno, AKIRA, and the Designers Republic to convey a air of modernity gone badly wrong. We set the full lyrics of the title track in red and ran them sideways along the bottom edge of the poster, suggesting both an audio equalizer display and leaping flames.
