Durand

Durand got its start as a single-weight branding and headline face for Ireland’s leading financial newspaper, the Business Post, which was transitioning to a multi-platform news source and wanted its typography to be keep up. From the beginning, we were itching to expand it into a full family, and now we’ve gone and done it, with eight weights ranging from Thin to Black. Durand is compact and snugly fitted, as befits a headline face. Flared serifs and sharply drawn detailing keep it lively even in the heaviest weights. The Thin style is truly wraithlike, the lightest serif letterforms we’ve ever drawn, and accordingly there were big consequences each time we moved a node a unit or two, but we got through it with the help of fasting and prayer and are now enjoying the profoundly pointy result. Italics are in progress, and we’re exploring the possibility of a companion text series sometime or other, but we’ve been down that road, so no promises.
